What is the time commitment? ¿Cuál es el compromiso de tiempo?
Cheerleading at Woodside is considered a year round sport. We start with summer conditioning and preparing for our football season. We cheer at ALL Varsity football games and sometimes JV games. This means some game days we will start cheering around 4pm and finish around 10:30pm. During basketball season we cheer at Girls and Boys varsity games. There could be some instances where we will cheer at Freshmen or JV games. In the past, practices have been on Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday from 4:00 - 6:30 with games on Fridays. These days/times can change depending on the needs of the team.
Do we have summer practice? ¿Tenemos práctica de verano?
YES! Day/Time has not been decided YET, but summer practices are highly recommended for your improvement on the team. If you have a vacation or summer job planned you are expected to learn everything you miss on your own time. This is a great way to make friends on the team and have them help you. Something to keep in mind: if you do not know the cheers/band dances/halftime performance, you will not be allowed to cheer with the team until you have learned everything. We learn a lot during summer and you are expected to keep up.
Can I play another sport AND cheer? ¿Puedo practicar otro deporte Y animar?
The answer is a little challenging. YES you can play another sport BUT it depends on the season the sport is happening AND if your other coach will allow it. For cheer, we spend summer/fall working on and building the necessary skills that will be used during football and basketball season. For this reason you CANNOT be on the cheer team and play on a fall sports team. The practices times and games will conflict too much. HOWEVER, if you want to play a winter sport, you CAN cheer for summer and football season, then "quit" the cheer team to play a winter sport. I am fine with that as long as you communicate your intentions to your winter sport coach and they know you have a commitment to the cheer team until the end of November. Spring sports are not typically affected by this. They tend to begin practice around the time we are ending our season (If you are not on the competitive team). If you want to play an outside club team, that should not be a problem if you are able to commit equally to both teams. If you think this might be a challenge, communicate this to Coach Jaymie and you can hopefully work something out.
What GPA do I need to cheer? ¿Qué GPA necesito para animar?
I would LOVE for you to sit comfortably with a 3.0 or higher! That way you never have to worry about making grades. However, SUHSD requires a 2.0 GPA in order to participate on any sports team. There is no exception to the 2.0 rule. If you do not make grades each quarter you will not be allowed to cheer at any games/halftime performances. You are still expected to go watch and support your team from the sidelines.
What happens if I have to miss practice or a game?
Please try your best to attend ALL practices and games. I understand that emergencies/appointments do come up. Please do your best to communicate this ASAP. Please note if you miss a practice on a day when formations are being set, a spot will not be saved for you. Also, if we are learning new material you are expected to learn on your own from a teammate. Please always make sure to check the BAND app and a friend so you know everything you miss at practice.
If you are missing practice on a regular basis, this is grounds for dismissal from the team. Please make sure that you are doing your best to be at practice.
